Joanna Stern folded one iPhone Duo review unit more than 32,000 times over four nights. She said the hinge felt much the same in everyday use afterward, while a calibrated push-pull gauge indicated greater stiffness.
What Stern’s test found
Stern’s custom mechanism put the hinge through more than 32,000 folds. Her assessment of how it felt in everyday use and the gauge reading describe different things: one is a tactile impression, while the other measures the force needed to open the hinge.

How the test was set up
The phone had a case on, and the mechanism opened it flat but did not fully close it on every cycle. Stern’s results describe this one review unit under those conditions.

What 32,000 folds mean in everyday use
At exactly 20 folds per day, 32,000 folds work out to 1,600 days, or about 4.4 years. That is a calculation based on an assumed daily rate, not a measured service life for the iPhone Duo.
