A Different Kind of Superman
Imagine if Kal-El had landed not on a Kansas farm but in the town of Isidro Casanova, Buenos Aires, Argentina. How would his life have turned out? Very differently, for sure, from the reporter and superhero we all know. In this vision presented by author Leonardo Oyola in his novel Kryptonita (2011), Superman is known as El Pinino and leads the Nafta Súper Gang, a group of thieves famous throughout the greater Buenos Aires area. The story begins when, one night, Nafta Súper (El Pinino) is fatally wounded, and the gang takes him to a hospital, where they hold a doctor and a nurse hostage to treat their leader. Meanwhile, the hospital is surrounded by corrupt Buenos Aires provincial police, who come to eliminate Súper at his most vulnerable moment.
The Argentine Justice League
This successful novel by Leonardo Oyola is now getting the big-screen treatment. Directed by Nicanor Loreti, who already surprised us with the film Diablo, Kryptonita presents an Argentine, marginal version of the Justice League. Known as the Nafta Súper Gang, its most prominent members include Juan Raro, who possesses an intelligence not of this world (a nod to Martian Manhunter), the Faisán, who has a ring that lights up and seems to be a weapon (like Green Lantern), and Ráfaga, who has an almost unbelievable speed (do we even need to say who he alludes to?). In this story, the police are the bad guys, and so we find villains like Corona, a cop who never stops laughing like a madman and has his face painted white, and El Cabeza de Tortuga, a member of the GEO group who had previously faced off with Nafta Súper, and both ended up dead. If there is one thing this movie will not lack, it's comic book references.

Beyond reinventing the origins of DC Comics' most iconic characters, Kryptonita reflects a dark reality seen every day around here: the night work of doctors, police corruption, and the use of minors for criminal acts are commonplace in this story of marginalized characters living in low-income neighborhoods where everything is fair game to survive. The main cast includes Juan Palomino, Pablo Rago, Diego Velázquez, Lautaro Delgado, Diego Capusotto, Nicolás Vázquez, Diego Cremonesi, Susana Varela, Sofía Palomino, Pablo Pinto, Sebastián De Caro, and Luis Ziembrowski. Produced by Crudo Films and Energia Entusiasta, the film is directed by Nicanor Loreti (Diablo). Kryptonita is scheduled for release on December 3, 2015.
