The last independent version of DOS debuted in June 1994, and while it's still possible to find hardware capable of running it natively, the most convenient option for the average user is an emulated environment like DOSBox. DOSBox is easy to install on computers, but what about mobile devices? On Android, one of the most solid and clean alternatives is Magic DosBox.
If you've never played an MS-DOS game before, this is one of the best times to do so. First, games are relatively easy to obtain, and you'll discover that their requirements are insignificant compared to the power of an average computer.
A practice increasingly popular on YouTube is building retro PCs with original Sound Blaster cards, PCI or AGP graphics cards, and some quality-of-life replacements like removing old IDE drives in favor of Flash drives. However, hunting down old parts and solving configuration issues isn't for everyone. That's when the incredible DOSBox and the Magic DosBox app come in, probably one of the best ports for Android.
DOSBox for Android: PC Games on Your Android Phone
Before running Magic DosBox, it's best to load all games either on the device's internal memory or on an external card. Inside the app, press the plus button and indicate the exact path to the game. As far as I can tell, there's no autodetection of titles; you have to create a shortcut manually for each one.
These shortcuts have advanced options linked to DOSBox. Generally, you don't need to change them, but some games are harder to process than others and require an extra adjustment or two. The rest is a matter of opening the shortcut (and by extension DOSBox), typing the game's executable, and creating an on-screen virtual keyboard. The process is tedious, but it works.
In terms of performance, Magic DosBox is impeccable. Its developers have implemented several speed optimizations, and it includes support for physical mice and gamepads (I imagine there'll be no problems using a keyboard with USB OTG adapters). Add to that direct loading of ISO images, and a series of widgets that let you take notes or read walkthroughs for the toughest games.
The free edition of Magic DosBox limits the number of widgets to three, and it's an excellent starting point for most users, but I recommend paying the four dollars for the full edition and contributing to its development.
