If catching Pokémon isn’t your thing, but you’d rather live a magical adventure with spells and fantastic creatures, then this game will interest you. Its name is Maguss, and it’s like Pokémon GO but with wizards à la Harry Potter.
What is Maguss?
Pokémon GO fulfilled the dream of millions of fans to become a Pokémon master and explore their neighborhoods in search of Pikachu and friends. Building on that concept, we’ll soon be able to enjoy Maguss, a game like Pokémon GO but with wizards à la Harry Potter. Maguss is an augmented reality mobile game that lets you be a wizard in a world of spells, potions, duels against other wizards, and encounters with fantastic creatures. You can team up with your friends to form a party and go searching for magical artifacts to learn new spells.
Judging by the video, one might think it’s a new Harry Potter augmented reality game. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the creator of this game, Ondrej Tokar, stresses not linking Maguss to J. K. Rowling’s famous wizard to avoid problems (though he admits he’d love to get in touch with Warner Bros. for a possible partnership). The novelty of this game is that, besides the mobile phone, you need a Maguss wand. This peripheral connects to the app via Bluetooth, allowing you to perform the characteristic wand movements when casting a spell.
Like Pokémon GO, Maguss uses geolocation data so that players can see magical portals, wizards, witches, monsters, and beasts through the game, as well as different types of magic and sorcery when fighting. The game has been in development for two years, and in a few months a crowdfunding campaign will begin, allowing several users to reserve the wand. While the game will be free to download, the estimated price for the wand is $35 (the pre-sale price is planned to be $25). Maguss is being developed by Ondrej Tokar and will be available on mobile devices. For now, the game does not have a concrete release date.
