The Battle Royale wave has swept the gaming world, leaving a triumvirate of PUBG, Fortnite, and Apex Legends. Sure, other projects have tried to ride that same wave (with varying degrees of success), but there's a small initiative out there that's much more addictive than we initially imagined. Its name is Mario Royale, and basically you have to traverse the levels of the classic Super Mario Bros. controlling a clone of Mario... while everyone else dies along the way.

Mario Royale

There's no denying it: almost every query I've received in recent months to assemble a computer has featured Fortnite, PUBG, and Apex Legends as central elements. Another highly requested title is CS:GO, but there's no doubt that the Battle Royale virus has 'infected' a new generation of players who hone their skills by following streamers and major e-sports tournaments. However, that doesn't mean Battle Royale is incompatible with casual games. Quite the opposite.

What Is Mario Royale?

This is where we cross paths with Mario Royale, from YouTuber and programmer InfernoPlus. The project has been described by its creator as 'sinful and vile.' Transforming one of the best games in history into a Battle Royale? I suppose the mere idea can cause hives, but there's also another risk: that Nintendo's legal representatives stick a nuclear missile up InfernoPlus's rear as a suppository. The good news is it doesn't use assets from the original game. It's pure HTML5 with a Java backend. How long did it take? About three weeks.

Power-ups help, but speed is more valuable toward the end.

The rest is Super Mario Bros... with an average of 70-75 players per match (the max is 99). On one hand, having those opponents makes it very difficult to access power-ups, and on the other, they can clear enemies from the level for you, or fall into their clutches. Mario Royale includes several warps, though not all (the level 1-2 warp was replaced with a giant 'Nice Try').

Players don't attack each other directly, but rather through what the level offers. For example, do you stomp a koopa troopa and kick its shell? If other players don't dodge it, they'll die. The most dangerous thing is facing someone with a star. Everything it touches dies, including their opponents in the match.

Victory! I was number 2 in a match.

Winning Mario Royale requires endurance and speed. It's not enough to survive: you have to beat the fake Bowser, grab the axe 'and' be one of the first three. The stage is chosen randomly at the start of each match. You might end up in the familiar 1-1, or get thrown into the upper levels, historically more difficult. Want to reconfigure the keyboard or use a gamepad? No problem, the game supports both.

Mario Royale is free, although InfernoPlus has three requests: that you try it, that you collaborate via Patreon to maintain the server (more than a thousand players at the same time isn't cheap), and that Nintendo doesn't sue him.
