After much anticipation following the ending of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel has finally revealed the first trailer for Captain Marvel, the latest addition to the final phase of the MCU.
Carol Danvers is one of the greatest heroines in Marvel comics, and her impact on the story is highly significant. In this new film, which is set to premiere in March of next year, we will get to learn more about her history and origins.
Set in the 1990s
The story is set in the 90s, as Captain Marvel lands in a Blockbuster (now extinct) and gives us the temporal reference. There she makes contact with a much younger Nick Fury (he has both eyes) and her companion Phil Coulson, both members of S.H.I.E.L.D, which already links us to the post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War. In the scene we also see Mar-Vell, incarnated by Jude Law.
In the trailer we'll see Captain Marvel accompanied by the StarForce, a group of Kree warriors. The reference to the Kree in the current MCU is found in Guardians of the Galaxy with the character of Ronan, an enemy in the first installment. The villains of the movie will be the Skrulls, a race of shapeshifting aliens led by Talos. The Kree-Skrull war is one of the most outstanding comics created in 1971 by Neal Adams, John and Sal Buscema. In 2008 it was released in Secret Invasion as the infiltration of the Skrulls and their invasion of Earth.
Kevin Feige, director of Marvel Studios, said that the film won't be the first or the last to have a female protagonist. It has already been announced that Black Widow will have her own film, with Scarlett Johansson in the lead role. Marvel has tried to strengthen female roles in recent years, even more so after the success of Wonder Woman from DC. Feige also announced that the film will take place largely in space and will have nods to 90s classics like Terminator 2.
Cast and Crew
Captain Marvel will be directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The script will be by Meg LeFauve (Inside Out), Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider) and the duo Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch from Glow.
The cast will include: Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Clark Gregg (Coulson), Ben Mendelsohn (Talos), Jude Law (Mar-Vell), Kenneth Mitchell (Joseph Danvers), Mckenna Grace (young Captain Marvel), Gemma Chan (Minn-Erva), Djimon Hounsou (Korath) and Lee Pace (Ronan).
Release Date
March 8 will be the release date, and Captain Marvel's debut in this MCU will be transcendental for the end of Avengers, which will have its release date in April 2019.
