Matrix 4: Sequel Confirmed with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss

It has been 15 years and 9 months since the original release of The Matrix Revolutions, the conclusion to the successful franchise developed by the Wachowski sisters, with Keanu Reeves at the helm. After many back-and-forths, rumors, and speculations, we now have confirmation: The Matrix 4 is a fact. Both Keanu and Carrie-Anne Moss will return to their classic roles, while Lana Wachowski will handle writing, directing, and producing this new adventure.

The machines and the inhabitants of Zion reached peace. Smith and all his clones were destroyed. The Oracle and the Architect debate the future of the relationship between humans and machines. And the price to pay? None other than Neo, the “anomaly” returning to the system… or at least that’s what we saw on screen. Since then, many hypotheses have emerged, including a very famous one that places agent Smith as the true chosen one, but the Oracle’s words still resonate: We will see Neo again, someday.

Well, everything seems to indicate that that day is closer, if we go by the explosion of news that hit the internet in the last few hours. Toby Emmerich, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, confirmed that WB and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and distribute The Matrix 4. Now, no return to the iconic franchise can be complete without the names that shaped it in the first place, and on that front there’s also news.

Keanu Reeves returns as Neo

The first and most important: Keanu Reeves will be Neo again. Keanu is going through a phase of absolute adoration from the public, fueled by his exemplary off-screen behavior, the solid success of John Wick: Chapter 3 and his involvement in Cyberpunk 2077. This won’t be the actor’s only ‘return’ to previous roles, as he is also involved in the development of Bill & Ted Face the Music, set for release in 2020.

What about Trinity?

The second is that we’ll see Carrie-Anne Moss once more. Will she be Trinity? We all remember the end of her character in The Matrix Revolutions. Could the machines bring her back to life? Will it just be a memory inside the Matrix? Does she have a twin sister and we never knew? Many questions, perhaps too many.

Lana Wachowski takes the helm

Finally, Lana Wachowski will be in charge of the script (including Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell), direction, and production. The last cinematic projects of the Wachowski sisters (Speed Racer, Ninja Assassin, Cloud Atlas, and Jupiter Ascending) were true box-office flops, while Netflix gave the thumbs down to Sense8 after just two seasons. Will Matrix 4 be the key to breaking that streak? We’ll have to wait. Production will begin next year.
