They say that good things come in small packages, though that phrase doesn’t necessarily extend to technology. If we limit ourselves to computers, we are always looking for higher performance, greater capacity, and increased efficiency, but the world of cameras can be very special. Take the case of this new unit presented by Canon. Its sensor is only 2.26 megapixels, a detail that enables it to capture 1080p, and no more than that. Even the most basic smartphone offers a camera with higher resolutions; however, the ME20F-SH is anything but basic.
A Sensor That Sees in the Dark
Canon describes the ME20F-SH as a multipurpose camera. Its EF mount and Cinema Lock system open up a huge range of possibilities when pairing it with different lenses (the full list of compatibility is still to be confirmed by the company), but we must return to the sensor. This little monster can capture light levels as low as 0.0005 lux, which with a maximum gain of 75 dB yields an ISO exceeding four million. Its support for remote control and the ability to install it semipermanently make it ideal for activities such as astronomy, nighttime wildlife recording, underwater exploration (with proper protection), and surveillance tasks.
Price and Availability
The Canon ME20F-SH will be available only in select stores, and as for the price... well, we really shouldn't be surprised. Canon anticipates that the camera will retail for an estimated $30,000, and that's only for the body. Given the notable number of connectors it has, one can't help but think of a full series of accessories to accompany the ME20F-SH, which will undoubtedly raise the cost. Now, anyone needing an ISO of four million knows which direction to look.
