Mega Man 2.5 is a game made by fans who understand the work they love better than its own creators. It has everything we love about Mega Man games: varied and well-designed levels, high difficulty, sneaky enemies, classic final bosses, and super fun weapons. It also includes several beautiful surprises: a two-player cooperative mode, a versus mode (also for two players), achievements, various unlockables, and, of course, two and a half dimensions full of pure 8-bit delight. An instant classic!
A Fan-Made Love Letter
For eight years, Peter Sjostrand and his team of collaborators used every free minute of their lives to give shape to Mega Man 2.5, a digital wonder that remakes many of Mega Man's great adventures, only in two and a half dimensions. It's the same Mega Man you've always known, with everything you know and love, but it adds an extra 0.5 dimensions, which adds a lot of depth to the horizontal movement of the robotic hero. Very similar to what the 3DNES emulator tries to do (converting NES ROMs to 3D), but subtracting 0.5 dimensions. The result is fantastic, as you can see in the presentation video.
Classic Gameplay, Now in 2.5D
For the rest, Mega Man 2.5 plays like always. You move horizontally through all kinds of levels, fighting the most annoying enemies, dodging the traps of the design, fighting final bosses, and using their weapons to make the levels a bit easier. Because, as in all games in the saga, it is vitally important to do the levels in the correct order, or the final fights, among other things, will be much more difficult for you. During the levels, memorization is crucial. Don't expect to beat any without quite a bit of practice first. This is "Nintendo Hard", folks!
Co-op, Versus, and More
The best addition of this 2.5 version (beyond the aesthetic rejuvenation) is the incorporation of an extra that changes everything: the two-player cooperative mode in simultaneous! Yes, as you read: Mega Man 2.5 includes a cooperative mode that allows you to devastate the enemy robots with the help of Proto Man, in the style of Contra or Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers. Playing a pure-bred Mega Man with a friend sitting next to you makes the experience completely different. It's almost another game, where coordination and teamwork are as crucial as skill and practice.
The novelties don't stop there. Mega Man 2.5 also offers a versus mode, in which you fight against a friend in levels specifically designed for the fray. Achievements come to the rescue to add a bit of replayability to this explosive cocktail. Once overcome, you can exchange them for all kinds of unlockables, which expand the game's content even more.
