MegaDownloader: Download Without Limits on MEGA

When it comes to getting content outside traditional channels, users usually follow one of two paths. The first is BitTorrent, with its trackers, seeds, peers, and technical quirks. The second is the endless well of direct downloads, which works reasonably well with the right tools. One such tool is MegaDownloader, a small program that manages all downloads coming from the MEGA platform, and when combined with another app, it's possible to bypass several existing limits.

Imagine you're at home, still in quarantine, and many of the free options for getting content have expired. That brings you back to the "old circuits" that never really disappeared, just changed some of their basic parameters. Of course, I'm referring to direct downloads. Several giants bit the dust over the years, but others quickly took their place. MEGA, the former brainchild of Kim Dotcom (does anyone remember him?), sits on top of the list.

Now, today we're not going to share tricks for finding MEGA links (that's up to you), but what we can do is take a close look at one of its unofficial download managers, MegaDownloader. Developed by Andrés Soliño, MegaDownloader is a kind of jDownloader focused exclusively on MEGA, and I first talked about it in December 2015. It's quite lightweight, has a portable edition, and its dependencies are basic... but to download it, we're going to commit one of the biggest betrayals in anime: using a Mediafire link for a program dedicated to MEGA. Why? Because between popups and half-broken "adfly" links, it was impossible (at least for me) to get the download from the official site.

When using the portable version, there's nothing to modify. To start, just confirm the factory settings, and once that's done, MegaDownloader will stay in the background, waiting for you to send compatible links to the clipboard. During the process you can change the file name, its destination, and tell MegaDownloader to create a folder for each download. If the file is compressed, you can request its decompression and enter the password (if it uses one).

So, what's this "without limits" about?

It happens that MEGA implements several download restrictions. Some users say they are 700 megabytes per day, others talk about 1.5 gigabytes, and others put it much higher. The point is that combining MegaDownloader with Psiphon 3 should work wonders. Psiphon 3 is a tool that jumps over censorship protocols and avoids geographical barriers. With MegaDownloader downloading files, all you have to do is open Psiphon 3 and let it connect. If MegaDownloader loses speed or stops downloading without reason, the solution is to choose another country from the Psiphon 3 list.

Technical note: False positives

To finish, a technical detail: MegaDownloader reports several false positives on VirusTotal. That's because the .exe file uses MPRESS, a compactor for .NET executables that reduces its size to just 2.04 megabytes. We haven't detected anything strange during MegaDownloader's operation, but if you have doubts, nothing prevents you from using a virtual machine to run it. And before the complaints appear, MegaDownloader is not illegal. It's just a download manager. What the end user does with it is another story.
