Meta is reportedly preparing a camera-free Ray-Ban Meta model internally identified as Luna. The reported concept would remove the outward-facing camera but retain audio hardware and access to Meta AI, offering a different answer to the privacy concerns surrounding camera-equipped smart glasses. The development became public on September 15, 2026.
What the reported Luna design would keep
The reported hardware profile is surprisingly familiar: Luna would include six microphones, speakers, audio playback and voice interaction. A dedicated button would provide quick access to Meta AI.
That combination points to glasses focused on listening, responding and delivering information rather than capturing a first-person video feed. The reports also associate the model with Meta AI, but do not establish a display or define which assistant features would work without a camera.
What removing the camera would change
Current Ray-Ban Meta glasses use their camera for several of their most distinctive visual tasks. Demonstrated examples include live video calls, livestreaming, QR-code scanning, sign translation and object recognition.
A camera-free Luna would not provide those same camera-based workflows. Voice messages, audio playback and spoken interaction fit the reported design much more naturally; visual tasks would require another input method or a different product configuration.
That is an important dividing line. Removing the camera would not turn Luna into a simpler version of every existing Ray-Ban Meta feature. It would create a narrower product built around audio and AI interaction.
Why a camera-free model matters socially
The appeal is not merely technical. Users discussing camera-free eyewear have described it as easier to wear in public because it avoids the suspicion that someone might be recording. That concern has followed camera-equipped smart glasses, whose ordinary-looking frames can make it difficult for other people to distinguish harmless use from privacy-invasive filming.
The trade-off is clear: a camera-free design could make the glasses more socially comfortable, but it would also remove the hardware behind the platform’s most recognizable visual functions. Luna’s reported pitch is therefore less about adding another camera feature than about making AI eyewear easier to accept in everyday spaces.
When could Luna be shown?
A possible Meta Connect presentation on September 23–24, 2026 is the next reported milestone for Luna. Until then, the reported model remains a future Ray-Ban Meta development rather than a product readers can buy.
