Coinciding with the thirtieth anniversary of the franchise, a group of fans has just released Metroid 2 Remake, a free game for Metroid's 30th anniversary. If you're a fan of Samus's adventures, you can't miss this game.
On August 6, thirty years had passed since the release of the first Metroid for the Famicom Disk System in Japan. And as a celebration, a group of fans known as DoctorM64 released a remake of the classic Metroid II: Return of Samus that you can now download for free on your computer. Titled AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) it is a complete reinvention of the Game Boy version that came out in 1991. This group of fans had been working on a remake for years and just coincided with the franchise's thirtieth anniversary to release it for free.
Aesthetically and mechanically, AM2R will delight anyone who enjoyed Metroid: Zero Mission on Game Boy Advance (which itself was a remake of the first game). This sequel features improvements in both graphics and gameplay mechanics, as well as new areas to explore. Visually it looks phenomenal, with a 320x240 resolution that makes it look like a modern and attractive title, thanks to 60 frames per second animation. The story of AM2R takes place in the depths of planet SR388, where Samus will have to face all the evolutions of the creatures known as Metroids.
Among the new features in AM2R you can find a map system, improvements in enemy AI, and a high-quality soundtrack, among several other details. And while it is true that some users have already reported that the game has several bugs, as it is clarified on the official blog, AM2R is not a final version. This means there are a lot of improvements and features planned for the near future (including a Linux version that will come out soon). Developed by DoctorM64, AM2R is available for free on Windows via direct download or torrent.
