Microsoft’s September 23, 2026, announcement named the next Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch without the Copilot+ PC label. Both models use Snapdragon X2 Plus. Microsoft’s business documentation continues to describe Copilot+ PCs as a hardware-defined category.
What the Copilot+ PC label means
Microsoft describes Copilot+ PCs as Windows devices with a neural processing unit (NPU) rated at 40+ TOPS. An NPU is a processor designed for AI workloads; TOPS means trillion operations per second.
Microsoft lists Recall, Click to Do, improved Windows search, Live Captions with translation, and Windows Studio Effects among the features that use the NPU in this category. The 40+ TOPS figure is the category’s documented baseline.
The new Surface PCs meet the previous requirements
Surface corporate vice president Brett Ostrum said the two devices meet the requirements of Microsoft’s previous Copilot+ bar. Their announcement uses the Surface product names without the Copilot+ PC label, even as Microsoft continues to describe the category in its business documentation.
Scheduled availability
Microsoft scheduled the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch to become available starting October 13, 2026, in select markets.
