On October 7, 2026, Microsoft announced that Copilot on Copilot+ PCs is expected to gain permission-based access to relevant local context, including files and recent activity, and to perform tasks in Windows. Those Copilot capabilities are planned for a gradual rollout; a separate Windows Search preview began rolling out to Insiders the same day.
What Microsoft announced for Copilot on Copilot+ PCs
Microsoft says Copilot is planned to use relevant content on the PC and carry out actions there with permission. The announced tasks include organizing files, assessing device diagnostics, troubleshooting, coding and completing workflows.
The announcement describes planned capabilities, not a completed general rollout. Microsoft expects them to begin rolling out to Copilot+ PCs over the coming months. Microsoft has also outlined workplace-focused Copilot plans in separate coverage.
The hybrid approach uses local models and cloud intelligence
Microsoft describes a hybrid design: Copilot can use models running on the PC as well as cloud intelligence. The approach is not local-only, and Microsoft’s announcement does not assign specific tasks to one processing location or the other.
Microsoft Execution Containers set organizational policies
Separately, Microsoft says Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC) are generally available on Windows 11. Organizations can define which files and networks agents may access, with those policies enforced at runtime. Microsoft notes that large-scale governance may require additional services.
Windows Search actions are a separate preview
Windows Search began a gradual rollout of inline actions to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel on October 7. Initially, the preview supports English. The actions include changing settings, making quick adjustments and managing windows; they are separate from Copilot’s planned access to local files.
Microsoft listed builds 26340.9616 and 28120.3181 for the relevant Experimental channels. The preview also requires a feature flag and a restart.
Copilot rollout is planned for Copilot+ PCs
Microsoft says Windows Update is required for the planned Copilot features. Their timing and availability may vary by device, market and silicon platform.
