Microsoft plans to retire eight OneDrive-related Copilot actions from the Windows 11 File Explorer context menu in a worldwide staged rollout scheduled to start in mid-November 2026 and finish by early December. Other ways to access Copilot are set to remain available.
The eight actions scheduled for retirement
The change affects these commands in the context menu for OneDrive files:
- Summarize
- Create FAQ
- Compare Files
- Ask a question
- Explain image
- Explain images
- Compare images
- Extract text
Microsoft describes the change as an effort to simplify Copilot use with OneDrive files in File Explorer and reduce entry points.
Where users can still access Copilot
After the planned change, users will still be able to right-click a OneDrive file and choose “Ask Copilot,” select the Copilot icon when hovering over a file in File Explorer Home, or use Copilot actions in the OneDrive activity center.
What IT teams need to know
Microsoft says administrators do not need to make a configuration change. It recommends notifying affected users and updating help-desk or training documentation that refers to the retiring commands.
When a file is attached to a Copilot conversation, it is attached by reference. Microsoft says the file’s existing permissions and protections continue to apply.
