The ritual of reinstalling Windows remains as tedious and frustrating as ever, but users of x86 systems have no major problem obtaining a compatible ISO image. In contrast, everyone who bet on an ARM platform in recent months was forced to juggle mutated Windows Insider images (or seek out "less official" sources), with mixed results. Fortunately, someone in Redmond decided to fix this situation, and the official Windows 11 download page now includes generic ISO images for ARM computers and virtual environments.
Generic Windows 11 images for ARM PCs
Unfortunately, ARM PC users have been treated as "second-class citizens". Why? Let's just say all the shine of "Windows on ARM" vanished in record time: on one hand, Qualcomm didn't even manage to offer developers a proper hardware kit (announced for June, cancelled in October), and on the other, Redmond didn't enable generic Windows 11 images compatible with ARM as it does with x86 images... until now.
Following a promise made last month, Microsoft finally created a section dedicated to generic Windows 11 ISO images for ARM PCs. The download size averages around 5 gigabytes, and all systems with the Snapdragon X chip should find compatibility "out-of-the-box". However, the existence of a generic image does not eliminate the requirement for special drivers. The newest devices will likely get them via Windows Update, but if someone wants to test on an ARM computer with Windows 10, one or two additional downloads might be necessary.
Finally, Windows 11 on ARM has its own requirements. The minimum supported is a Snapdragon 850 SoC, and the full compatibility list is limited to a handful of processors.
