In general, when a user reaches the conclusion that they need additional accessories for their mobile devices, it is complicated to find options with broad compatibility. Fortunately, the mobile landscape is changing, and the combination of smartphones and tablets is an increasingly important factor. With that in mind, Microsoft took advantage of its visit to the Mobile World Congress to present a new foldable Bluetooth keyboard, resistant to liquids, and compatible with all major platforms.
The challenge of universal accessories
One of the most interesting details in the mobile world is that the user can opt for almost any combination of devices. iPhone and Android tablet? Android smartphone with an iPad? It may sound strange, but it is not impossible, especially if we take into account the presence of Windows Phone and Windows 8.x on devices like the Surface Pro 3, with increasing popularity across the pond. Of course, the mix usually falls apart when accessories like chargers and keyboards come into play. In the case of chargers, Apple has until 2017 to adapt to the decisions of the European Parliament; however, many keyboards limit their compatibility to specific models of smartphones and tablets. Bluetooth technology tries to do its best to provide a common territory, but there is always some element that resists.

In the middle of the Mobile World Congress, Microsoft presented an alternative called the Universal Foldable Keyboard. We are looking at a keyboard that can be folded and stored easily, with a size similar to that of a compact disc case. It is resistant to spills, the key layout is relatively standard (the split separates the 't' from the 'y', something we already saw in other ergonomic keyboards from the company), and its integrated battery lasts three months on a full charge. Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity makes this keyboard compatible with Android (4.3 and later), iOS (7.0-8.1), Windows Phone (8.1 Update 2), and Windows 8.x, although the device must also have HID support for keyboards.
Availability and price
The Universal Foldable Keyboard can be associated with two devices simultaneously, and switch between them with dedicated keys. There are also keys for media control, and Microsoft even took the trouble to include the Command key logo, undoubtedly a nod to Apple users. The announced price for the keyboard is $100 (technically USD 99.95) and it will be available starting in July.
