Little can be said about Minecraft and its massive popularity... except for one detail: it costs 27 dollars on its official store today. That makes it unaffordable for many people (despite its 170 million copies sold), and there's no point in getting pirated copies because of its online features. So, what alternatives are there? One of the most interesting and complete ones is Minetest. Technically it's a graphics engine, but with years of development behind it, today we can enjoy it as a free Minecraft clone, downloading special levels and mods.
There's something unique about sandbox games. I admit that sooner or later some of them become boring, but there's always the possibility of installing mods or exploring other modes. Personally, I've already spent more than twenty hours immersed in Astroneer (nightmares about oxygen tanks included), however, there's a pending debt with Minecraft. Almost immediately anyone understands its appeal: a whole world made of blocks, which we can modify and destroy at will. With 170 million copies sold, it's clear that Minecraft is inexhaustible.
The problem is... its price. Unless you decide to gamble using an online reseller, Minecraft costs 27 dollars. The only official and free alternative is to play the classic version of Minecraft, with all its original bugs and limitations. And what about unofficial alternatives? If your plan doesn't include an eye patch... there's Minetest. Its official page describes it as a "voxel graphics engine", but don't let that fool you. Without a doubt, it's the most complete free Minecraft clone on the web.

Where do we begin? The simplest thing is to download a portable copy, which runs directly from a temporary folder. The .exe file is inside the 'bin' subfolder, a double click is enough. Minetest should be able to detect the operating system's language. During our tests it always loaded in Spanish, and the translation is quite good. The rest is a matter of going to 'Start Game', selecting 'Minetest Game' as the base, choosing one of the generators, and writing a 'seed' (numbers, letters, words, whatever you can think of). A new world awaits you.
Want more? Don't worry. There are dozens of online games that will welcome you with open arms, and in the Customize section of the official page you'll find whole worlds, mods, graphic packs, and more (from sound effects to climates, through means of transport and a wide number of mobs). One of the worlds that stands out is Voxelgarden, in which we basically have the objective of surviving. Think of 'Robinson Crusoe', with lots of blocks. Free, open source, and compatible with almost all operating systems. Minetest is probably the best option before paying 27 dollars for Minecraft. It requires some manual intervention to install mods and extend its resources, but that hasn't stopped us before, nor will it now. Enjoy!
