The tech world seems convinced that the future is in our pockets, but all too often the traditional mobile format works against us. That has led to platforms like Microsoft Continuum and Samsung DeX, and the crowdfunding scene is not far behind, offering us things like Mirabook, a platform that leverages the power of smartphones, tablets, PC Sticks, and even a Raspberry Pi.
There are three smartphones and two tablets in my home, but none of these devices are used for work. Personally, I think they are much more effective as consumption platforms (multimedia content, social networks, news, messaging, etc.), although I must admit there is a trend shift. Most users have turned smartphones and tablets into the main vehicles of their digital lives, so it is inevitable to consider a much more productive profile for them. Some companies, including Microsoft and Samsung, have already explored turning smartphones into laptops. Then we find parallel projects like Superbook, and following that same line, Mirabook arrives:
Specifications and Compatibility
The team behind Mirabook showcased prototypes at the last CES and Mobile World Congress, but it is still a work in progress. Its screen is 13.3 inches with 1080p resolution, and the central connection is USB-C, compatible with SlimPort technology. This detail partially limits the number of supported smartphones (seven Android units and four Windows 10 Mobile so far), but it opens the door to other very interesting options, starting with several Windows 10 PC Sticks and a Raspberry Pi. It also includes a microSD card slot, speakers, an HDMI port, a 3.5mm audio output, two standard USB ports, a multi-touch trackpad, and an internal battery that lasts ten hours.
Crowdfunding Campaign
The Mirabook campaign on Indiegogo has a month ahead and still needs just over 11,000 dollars to reach its goal. The minimum price for the laptop is 180 dollars (shipping not included), and the first deliveries will take place in December of this year.
