One of the most frequent recommendations on the Web is to install Linux to get extra performance from an old computer, but the question is, how far back can we go? Some distributions simply aren't prepared to work with such ancient hardware. However, a user known as 'MingcongBai' on Imgur decided to take Linux to the limit by installing a retro variant of AOSC OS on a 1994 Toshiba T4900CT laptop.
For many users out there, extending the useful life of a computer is a necessity. Some enthusiasts insist that Linux is the key. Do you want an office suite, an up-to-date browser, access to social networks, audio and video playback, and thousands of compatible programs? Everything starts with a distro, but ideally it should adapt as well as possible to the hardware that will serve as the base.
What you'll see below can be considered a proof of concept or a simple computer experiment, but behind the scenes it only confirms the flexibility of the penguin. The Imgur user 'MingcongBai' is a contributor to the AOSC OS project, and decided to create a retro variant compatible with i586 chips. For what? For installation on a 1994 Toshiba T4900CT.
Modern Linux on Retro Hardware
Let's start with the hardware: The Toshiba T4900CT has a special place in history for being one of the first laptops (not to say 'the' first) to use an Intel Pentium processor, in this case a classic P54C at 75 MHz.
The RAM was taken to its maximum of 40 MB, but it still retains its original 810 megabyte hard drive (772 MB formatted). The T4900CT was very high-end at the end of 1994 and beginning of 1995, with a staggering price of $7,499 (more than $12,500 adjusted for inflation).
At the time of posting the images, 'MingcongBai's computer loaded without issues the Linux longterm kernel 4.19.67 (the latest is 4.19.68), with systemd v242. Total memory consumption amounts to 8 megabytes, while the kernel occupies just 1.6 MB of RAM thanks to a minimal configuration. Ironically, the most complicated part for 'MingcongBai' was getting the operating system to enter the hard drive. Some things were left behind, like Python and Perl support.
What's next? Part of the community wants to repeat the experiment with alternative processors (Cyrix, AMD), therefore, 'MingcongBai' will look to reduce the requirements to i486. The rest is a matter of optimizing its performance. Bash needs to be replaced (it takes more than 10 seconds), and most likely GNU nano will receive adjustments in its .nanorc extensions.
