Moises: How to Remove Vocals and Accompaniment from a Song

We recently discussed Spleeter, a Python and TensorFlow tool by Deezer that can automatically remove the voice from a song. Its main drawback, though, is the difficult installation that keeps many interested users away. Thanks to the efforts of Geraldo Ramos and his portal called Moises, today we can take advantage of Spleeter to eliminate the vocals and accompaniment of a song in our preferred browser, with just a couple of clicks.

It should be simpler, we all agree with that. Unfortunately, it is not. Eliminating the vocals and accompaniment of a song presents several technical challenges, and multiple trial-and-error sessions until getting the best result. The web is full of tutorials, but user comments almost always go in the same direction: the process destroys the music, or leaves vocals as if they were sounding underwater.

How to remove vocals and accompaniment from a song

Obviously, the market has responded with dedicated and professional applications, which usually cost hundreds of dollars. However, the people at Deezer kicked the board of source separation by sharing their Spleeter tool, trained via machine learning with the extensive catalog that Deezer has in its power. Of course, its launch was not without limitations. Spleeter has no interface, and its installation is, in a word, complicated.

All that changed thanks to Geraldo Ramos and his portal Moises. Just as the name suggests, Moises adopts Spleeter's technology and applies it to separate the voice from the music. The site has a small sample that helps us determine what kind of results we could get, although everything will depend on the natural complexity of the song. The first step is to create a free account, and then we must upload the MP3 to separate, or as an alternative, place a YouTube link.

The process takes a few minutes (if you decide to separate with more stems, the wait will be longer), and it is carried out in the cloud. Once finished, you will receive a notification at your email address, but you can also play the separated audio directly on the page. My guinea pig was 'Build That Wall' from the soundtrack of the game Bastion. A very simple song, since it only has a female voice and a guitar.

I will be honest: I thought I would receive cleaner audio. The music ended up muffled and with changing volume, while the singer's voice still carries with traces of guitar in the background. Nothing a good filter cannot fix, but it is good to know that we need to moderate our expectations. Anyway, we are very grateful to Geraldo for facilitating the access of this tool to the public, in the cloud and free of charge.
