In practice, an Excel spreadsheet is more than enough, but the app MoneyManager Ex offers an optimal environment with advanced features for recording and tracking your finances.
That extra latte you bought for weeks, a last-minute impulse, two packages instead of one... it all piles up, and when you expect to have some extra cash for more important things, the money just isn’t there. I didn’t believe it at first, but after a few months I have to admit that expense tracking works. Losing sight of that money is never a good idea. Fortunately, there are apps that simplify the visualization process. One of the most interesting is MoneyManager Ex, which has our favorite triple crown: free, portable, and open source.
How to manage expenses with MoneyManager Ex
The first step is to create a database with an account inside.'Cash' is the simplest option for managing personal expenses, but there are also alternatives like Checking, Credit Card, Loan, Time Deposit, Investment, Asset, and Stocks. When creating a Cash account, MoneyManager Ex will ask you to confirm its state, initial balance, opening date, and currency (dozens of currencies available, with online updates for exchange rates).
The program might seem a bit intimidating on the surface, but adding and editing transactions is much simpler than it appears. The icons at the top are divided into categories, starting with database, accounts, 'New transaction', and organization functions (categories, payees, and currencies).
Now, what if we want to import data from elsewhere, or transfer our records to a different app? Luckily, MoneyManager Ex is compatible with CSV, XML, QIF, and JSON formats (export only). Finally, the official manual is available in more than a dozen languages, including Spanish. Link below!
