Few things grab as much attention on social networks as asking something like "I want to watch a movie this weekend, what do you suggest?" It's very likely that our contacts will immediately bombard us (in the good sense of the word) with their favorite films. The Web is full of systems that automatically recommend one name after another, but if you prefer something different... why not use a map? That's the experience offered by Movieland, a project in which more than 1,800 films become "towns and cities" to visit, following a high-quality map.
What movie are you going to watch in the coming days? Personally, my list keeps getting longer, and it includes both films and series, and even video games (a marathon session of Hollow Knight found its "total stop" last Saturday, and I haven't touched it since). While the whole world attacks me with spoilers from Stranger Things or Thor 3, and shouts that Justice League arrives in just a couple of weeks, it's almost impossible to keep up... or maybe that's the problem. Perhaps we need "our" own pace, leaving behind social media recommendations and the noise of the Web. That said, what if choosing a movie were as simple as following a map?
Exploring Movieland
With that idea we come to the Movieland project. Its creator, David Honnorat, is a graphic designer and a cinephile to the core who decided to pour more than 1,800 films (which he considers the best) into a very detailed map divided into regions that identify the genre. Without going too far, the "Sea of Spies" features six James Bond films (three classic, two modern, and one in between), the five Mission: Impossible films, and the original Jason Bourne trilogy.
The paths of the "Sci-Fi Mountains" can take us from Metropolis to Dune, passing through works like Gattaca, Sphere, and The Abyss. The "Valley of Love" brings together classics like Pretty Woman, Notting Hill, and When Harry Met Sally, but has a darker or spicier side with suggestions in the order of Secretary, Nymphomaniac, Sex, Lies and Videotape, and Lolita.
