Getting music is a very simple process these days, and with the huge amount of available formats, we can also transfer it to almost any device quickly. However, there is the detail of metadata, which allows us to identify each song and album precisely, and even add a small sample of its artwork. Many players fill these metadata automatically, but when it comes to manual edits, we have Mp3tag.
Today it is quite common for music players to offer additional information about a song, or the album we are listening to. That information comes through metadata that the player obtains from the network (and modifies the tag of each song to fill gaps if the user allows it), but that final support depends on the format type. In the case of MP3, nothing needs to be done thanks to its enormous popularity; however, when alternative formats are involved, traditional tools are likely to suffer some restrictions.
How to batch tag MP3 files with Mp3tag
That is where Mp3tag comes in, which recently reached version 3.26. Its compatibility extends to tags in all major versions of ID3, MP4, WMA (regardless of whether the codec is lossless or not), APEv2, and Vorbis comments. In other words, Mp3tag enables support for more than a dozen different formats.
Batch editing is without a doubt its most important feature, and it is accompanied by artwork insertion (so the player shows the album cover), replacement of words or characters (in case of a previous incorrect edit), and data extraction from databases such as Freedb, Discogs (requires account/API), and MusicBrainz.
Mp3tag is very lightweight (its installer is just under five megabytes), it does not include any kind of suspicious module, it has been translated into several languages, including Spanish (we can change this in the settings menu), and it works with any version of Windows starting from Windows 7 (the page keeps older builds for older operating systems).
