It’s sad, but we must admit it: the web is turning into a collection of crystal castles and private gardens. That isolated-service setup only complicates the user’s life, but fortunately there are developments like Muffon, which bring a bit of order to all that chaos. If you want to listen to music for free and run your searches across several platforms, this open-source client will serve you.
The so-called “service fatigue” is no invention. Users are simply tired of creating multiple accounts to access a morsel of content. And even more irritating is the concept of “punishment,” which limits that user or bombards their session with junk when they choose not to log in. For this reason we value the development of any cross-platform client, and that’s how we arrive at Muffon. This open-source project lets us search and listen to music for free across more than a dozen platforms, as well as play videos and get metadata.

Its official page offers a traditional installer and a portable build for Windows 10/11, but it’s also compatible with macOS and various flavors of Linux. The first thing Muffon asks us is whether we want to create an account; however, anonymous mode is more than enough to start.
Its search engine includes ten filters, with tracks, artists, lyrics, and videos standing out. Muffon allows us to prioritize which service to explore first, but if results come up empty, it will automatically present additional results from other platforms. When it comes to music, Last.FM is usually its first choice, followed by VK.
In some cases, all we can do is fetch metadata. Spotify fits that category, as it still lacks integration with the client (its developer confirmed it’s on the roadmap). To use Muffon as an alternative to the YouTube page, we must select “Video” in the filters, followed by YouTube or YouTube Music. Muffon assumes the wrapper role here, showing the full video rather than just the audio.
The radio function doesn’t seem to work all that well, and I haven’t detected much activity in its communities section either, but that’s not essential. In its settings menu, Muffon enables customization options for the interface, a dark mode, window and history control, autoplay, and more. Finally, Muffon includes a small equalizer that should be useful in most cases, even without presets. Download below!
