Why Parity Files Matter
Incomplete transfers, CRC errors, damaged sectors appearing out of nowhere… there are many reasons why one or more files can end up headfirst. As always, the first line of defense is the backup: Multiple copies and greater redundancy. But there is also the shortcut of parity files, which help us restore lost data as long as they have sufficient material. That's where MultiPar comes in, a program to create such files.
Critical data? Yes, every byte in our systems. The average user doesn't want to lose anything, and when they do, it's an automatic disaster. We've said it to the point of exhaustion, but it all comes down to behavior. Hard drives are not eternal. Solid state drives and optical discs neither. The discipline of backup is very poor, and we only remember its value when things fail. Instead of discussing classic backup techniques, today we'll take a closer look at parity files, which fight in unexpected data corruption scenarios. A file is lost partially or totally, but parity files can handle both incidents, assuming they have the exact material inside.
Creating Parity Files with MultiPar
How do we create those files? With the free tool MultiPar. I'm afraid it's not the most intuitive thing in the world, but MultiPar's basic functioning boils down to a game of efficiency. By far, the most important parameter is the redundancy. Depending on the percentage assigned, the restoration potential will be higher or lower, and at the same time its size will change. Setting up 100 percent redundancy makes no sense because it equates to a full backup, and the final size is larger than the original files. Instead, finding the ideal balance between redundancy and number of blocks will expand recovery capacity.
Another detail to keep in mind is that we should not overdo the number of blocks, because otherwise the file creation process will be much slower. In summary: MultiPar is not a resource developed with beginners in mind, but it has great value for adding an extra layer of security. One way or another, the important thing is to back up.
