The last piece of the puzzle comes thanks to Nolan himself, a large team of colleagues at the University of California (San Francisco), and the complete sequencing of Ata's DNA. The recent study finally confirms that Ata was a human girl, with 64 “unusual” mutations in at least seven genes known to cause major skeletal malformations, or to accelerate their development (consistent with previous assessments, which pointed to an age of 6-8 years at death).

This is compounded by a possible birth defect known as congenital diaphragmatic hernia, which prevents the full development of the diaphragm. In Nolan's opinion, Ata was stillborn or lost her life immediately after birth, about 40 years before her discovery in Atacama.
