Similar to Super Mario Maker, NESmaker includes all the utilities needed to present a complete game, with options like designing graphics and color palettes, a text editor for creating the narrative, customizing artificial intelligence, and creating menu screens and maps, among other features.
The tool was created accidentally a few years ago when the team The New 8-bit Heroes was developing an NES game engine in the archaic assembly language (6502). Since most of the team didn't know how to program well, they needed a much more efficient method to create prototypes and run quick tests, so they hired a programmer who developed NESmaker without realizing it. That's how the team now wants to leverage the tool to expand its current capabilities, and for that they ran a campaign via Kickstarter to raise funds, which in a few days paid off by exceeding the initial goal of $32,000.
Currently the tool is expanding its genre modules, such as the adventure, platformer, and RPG modules (which are already available). Two modules remain, brawler and shooter, which will be enabled once the campaign reaches the sum of $80,000. From $36 you can get the NESmaker software, but larger contributions will make you eligible for the NESmaker kit, which includes hardware to burn cartridges, or the NESmaker Pro, which adds all of the above plus the possibility of participating in the testing process that begins next month.
