Retro console is one of the best answers to the inevitable question: "What can I do with an old computer?" There are very good distros that already include all preconfigured emulators, but if you prefer to play on Windows, there are excellent options there too. One of them is Nestopia UE, a fork of the classic Nestopia that has accompanied us for years.
Super Mario Bros., Metroid, The Legend of Zelda, Punch-Out!!, Castlevania, Dr. Mario, Adventure Island, Batman, Duck Tales, River City Ransom, Contra, every variant of Tetris… Poor is the one who says the Nintendo NES doesn't have good games. If you're looking for a real challenge, you honestly should start on that platform, play, lose, and come back for more. Now, the market offers approximately two million clones of the NES Classic Mini, and accessing these titles shouldn't be that difficult… but there is also the path of emulation. The NES is one of the best documented consoles of recent decades, which means it can be emulated even on a gas pump. Our alternative? Start with Windows, using Nestopia UE.
How to emulate the Nintendo NES with Nestopia UE
If the name sounds familiar, it's because Nestopia UE is a fork of the classic Nestopia, whose development ended in 2008. The original edition still works fine, but with its last update published in December 2022, Nestopia UE is a much more interesting option. In addition to prioritizing aspects like accuracy, Nestopia UE also includes graphical filters that allow us to add a little flavor to mask the low-res of NES games, unless… that's exactly what you want.
Personally, all I did was set the screen size to 3x, keep the mode at 640x480, and leave the filter on the Standard option without changing its configuration. I admit that filters like xBR are very interesting, but my suggestion is to explore each entry on your own. At the same time, Nestopia UE enables certain technical alternatives such as emulation of a PAL NES console, the Japanese Famicom or the famous Dendy clone. Cheats have an entire dedicated section, and configuring a gamepad takes only a few seconds.
