Almost thirteen years after its original release, a new expansion for the mythical Age of Mythology has been announced. And a new expansion means a new civilization, among other features, which we'll cover in detail below.
Released in 2002 for PC, Age of Mythology introduced players to the mythology of the Greeks, Egyptians, and Norse in a real-time strategy spin-off of the Age of Empires series. The game was a commercial and critical success, leading to an expansion, The Titans, in 2003. Furthermore, last year the game was re-released on Steam as Age of Mythology: Extended Edition, a collection featuring an enhanced version of the main game and the expansion with new features.
Now, more than a decade later, a new expansion called Tale of the Dragon has been announced. Yes, it might seem unbelievable, but given that a new expansion for Age of Empires II is also on the way, the announcement of Tale of the Dragon is a logical step. Rooted in Chinese legend, this new expansion will introduce a welcome change of scenery, drawing from stories and heroes that may be less familiar to Western audiences than Zeus and Odin, with the introduction of a new civilization: The Chinese (likely from the Zhou, Qin, and Han dynasties).
At the moment, there are few details, not even a trailer, aside from an image showing a Chinese village defended by imperial soldiers and white tigers. Age of Mythology: Tale of the Dragon is being developed by Forgotten Empires and Skybox Labs and will be available on Windows. The game has no specific release date yet, but Forgotten Empires has announced it will share more details during its conference on October 2, 2015, via Twitch, so we'll have to wait to see what they have in store.
