A fairly common recommendation to “change the face” of an Android device is to replace the stock launcher. In some cases, this can also optimize performance by removing widgets and other secondary elements. We’ve previously discussed Nova Launcher, but today we want to mention Niagara Launcher, which, besides being a simple and intuitive launcher, gets along very well with older versions of Android.
The “launchers” or launchers that come preinstalled on Android devices are far from ideal. Some manufacturers place immovable elements on the home screen, others lack specific features, and then there are those that fill the screen with widgets or bloatware.
Optimizing Android and uninstalling apps is a different story, but changing the launcher presents no difficulty. All you need is a quick visit to the Play Store, download the desired launcher, and then set it as default. One of the most popular options is Nova Launcher, compatible with Android 8.0 or higher. However, we also find an excellent option in Niagara Launcher, which adopts a very clean design and has lower requirements.
How to Replace Your Android Device’s Launcher with Niagara Launcher
Niagara Launcher transforms the home screen into an initial list of “favorites” that is very easy to modify (it recommends a minimum of eight, but nothing stops us from adding more). The right side of the screen includes a sort of alphabetical index on which we can slide our finger to access a more traditional list with all the apps. Interestingly, that index works on both sides of the screen (even though it only appears on one), and left-handed users can use it without being disadvantaged.
Some of the secondary tools in Niagara Launcher are exclusive to its Pro version (for example, the weather widget and the automatic opening of music apps), but in general, the free edition does not feel limited. We can enable or disable its internal app search (available by swiping up), automatically sort apps by frequency of use, and use a two-column design on devices with large screens. Add to that the possibility of changing icons, installing alternative fonts, and forcing dark mode.
Personally, I am very satisfied with Niagara Launcher, and its experience is definitely superior to the classic Launcher3. Speaking of classics, Niagara supports installations on devices with Android 5 or higher, so that old tablet sleeping in the drawer can come back to life with an updated launcher.
