Listening to music on the Internet is just a couple of clicks away. YouTube has become the main free source of tunes, and those who prefer a more polished experience can always join the ranks of Spotify. However, that doesn't stop developers from trying to merge both concepts under a new platform. That's where Nuclear, an pre-alpha open source inspired by Spotify that explores tracks from services like YouTube and SoundCloud, and also leaves the door open for adding more sources with the help of plugins.
It's not hard to picture those applications and services that changed forever the way we consume multimedia content. I guess some of our readers still remember very well what Napster and Audiogalaxy were like, but today the game is in the hands of platforms at the level of Netflix and Spotify. That leads many developers to create clones, or try to optimize the original concept. And that's how we arrive at Nuclear, a new client based on the framework Electron that seeks to position itself as alternative to Spotify, enhancing its free profile and the combination of multiple sources.
Nuclear is in a very early stage of development. For now, it can only source material from two services: YouTube and SoundCloud. It also has an initial integration with Last.fm, and its plugin system will allow us to add more sources easily in the future. The interface has several limitations, starting with the lack of a back button, problems adding songs to the playlist, and a rather poor selection of gray tones that definitely needs a second look. Of course, all this could be fixed by someone who decides to join the project. The relevant code is hosted on GitHub, along with the entire package of downloads for Windows, Mac OS, and some flavors of Linux.
The changelog of the latest build makes it very clear: part of the functionality of Nuclear may be broken on Windows and Mac, but things are a bit better on Linux. It's good to know, because beyond my attempts, I never managed to get the program to play a song, regardless of whether the source was YouTube or SoundCloud. For now, Nuclear is an exercise in patience. Electron is not the most efficient or the fastest thing in the world, and the 'pre-alpha pains' are very intense. Anyway, my sample size is limited to 1, so don't hesitate to try it. It's possible that something is wrong with my machine, and that it works fine on yours.
