Without proper storage, old photos inevitably deteriorate, but digitalization can “freeze” and even repair their content. What once required a Photoshop expert is now automated thanks to artificial intelligence. The genealogy portal MyHeritage has released a photo enhancer that reduces the entire process to a couple of clicks.
I hardly have any photos from my childhood; moisture devoured them all, and without a scanner, there was no way to create backups. Personally, I recommend you don’t let it get to that point. If you have old photos to preserve, digitalization is a great ally. But what happens when the image already shows some deterioration?
Photoshop is the first line of defense, and we’ve already seen online what some experts can do. In these days, a fabulous resource joins in the form of artificial intelligence. With the right training, photos gain focus, lose stains, recover details. Of course, results aren’t always ideal, and there’s a huge margin for error, but if you want to try, all arrows point to the MyHeritage’s photo enhancer.

The main restrictions on MyHeritage Photo Enhancer’s free service are two: you need to create an account (or use Google or Facebook credentials), and the processed image will get a watermark. The rest is a matter of uploading the photo, waiting a moment, and enjoying the before and after. The platform offers no advanced modification parameters. That means we can’t prioritize things like focus or contrast, and all of that will need to be adjusted with an external editor.
Interesting, the AI also has an option to inject color into images. Sometimes the result is too optimistic, with overly saturated and intense tones, but overall, I think it does an acceptable job. Judging by Twitter’s reaction, MyHeritage’s enhancer is quite a success.
