With the release of Windows 8, Microsoft basically declared war on the classic Start menu, and although later versions gave some ground, the truth is that it never fully returned to the previous design. Fortunately, we still have the option to replace the Start menu in Windows 10 and other editions thanks to Open-Shell, a project that became the heir to the original Classic Shell, maintaining its broad compatibility and an open profile.

One of the first things that the specialized press and the general public asked when they saw the new Start menu in Windows 8 was "how do we disable it?", and when Microsoft responded "you can't", some developers didn't take long to create alternatives. One of the most well-known was Classic Shell by Ivo Beltchev, who did an extraordinary job restoring the conventional Start menu. However, Beltchev decided to stop development of Classic Shell in December 2017, at the same time declaring it open source.

That allowed its continuation under the name Classic Start, which later became NeoClassic-UI, and finally Open-Shell. Beyond the changes to its identity, the main goal remains the same: replace the Start menu in Windows 10 and earlier versions, offering a high level of customization. The available styles are three: Classic (ideal if you prefer something more "95/98"), Classic with two columns, and Windows 7.

In "Controls" we can change the menu's reactions depending on the combination of clicks and keys, "General Behavior" has values for animation delay and highlighting of new programs, "Skin" further modifies the appearance of the Start menu, and "Customize Start Menu" allows setting the position of each item, as well as hiding and adding entries, injecting separators, converting shortcuts into menus, and much more.

Open Shell is an excellent alternative to adapt the Windows Start menu to our needs, whether with a classic format or advanced customization. Many users who couldn't install Windows 10 on their systems and didn't want to go back to 8.1 because of its menu found in Open Shell the perfect solution.
