One of the most used services on our computer is the screen capture program. Because of this, almost all Windows users resort to third-party platforms to take full captures of the desktop, a specific part of the screen, or an active window. That's why we've put together a list of five open-source screen capture programs.
Other services you'll find in these programs include: screen recording in animated GIF format, uploading captures to Imgur, Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, setting shortcut keys for taking snapshots, and all of them come with built-in image editors, among other features.
ShareX
We'll begin with a great screen capture program. We're talking about ShareX, with which you can take full-screen snapshots, capture another screen (when using multiple monitors), capture a specific region, capture scrolling, capture the active window, record the screen (animated GIF), upload the capture via FTP, Imgur, Dropbox and other compatible services, and configure snapshot intervals. The tool includes a built-in editor that lets you use a highlighter, freehand drawing, stickers and annotations, among many other features.
Greenshot
Greenshot also has different capture modes: capturing the entire screen, a particular region, the last region, or an active window. The snapshot can be opened in MS Word, PowerPoint, OneNote, Excel, or its built-in editor. From its editor you can use tools: Rectangle, Highlighter, Text tool, Bubble, Line, Arrow, and incorporate annotations. Then export the image in BMP, PNG, JPG, ICO, TIFF, etc.
Lightscreen
Lightscreen has four capture modes: specific area, active window, select a specific open window, and full screen. But the main feature of the platform is uploading the screenshot to your Imgur account in an album or exporting it in BMP, PNG or JPG format.
Captura
Captura is a screen capture platform that you can install or use in portable mode. The most interesting feature of the platform is the recording option that lets you record the desktop and what your webcam captures in animated GIF format.
Screencap
Screencap is the simplest option on the list to capture the screen, because it's portable and works with two clicks. The platform offers full screen capture, a particular window, or a specific region. Captures are saved to the Desktop.
The list has very good alternatives to capture the screen. If you need something more powerful, without a doubt the choice will be “ShareX”. If you're looking for something simpler and uncomplicated, “Screencap” is the best option.
