OpenAI’s October 29, 2026 update doubled the previous Work and Codex allowance for ChatGPT Pro 100 and Pro 500, and canceled a planned reduction for Pro 200. Pro 200 accounts that had the lower allowance were raised to match the existing higher level; accounts already on the higher level kept it. The changes apply to Work and Codex usage, not every ChatGPT limit. (OpenAI release notes; OpenAI’s Pro tier details)

Which Pro accounts got more Work and Codex usage?

The change depends on the plan and, for Pro 200, the account’s previous allowance:

Plan or previous account allowanceChange to included Work and Codex allowance
ChatGPT Pro 100Doubled from the previous allowance
ChatGPT Pro 200, lower allowanceDoubled to match the existing higher allowance
ChatGPT Pro 200, higher allowanceRetained the existing higher allowance
ChatGPT Pro 500Doubled from the previous allowance

OpenAI said it applied the Pro 200 adjustment automatically, without requiring subscribers to wait for renewal or resubscribe. The planned reduction had been announced in an email on September 29. OpenAI also increased included Work and Codex usage for Business Premium. (OpenAI’s Pro tier details; OpenAI release notes)

Why twice the allowance does not mean twice the tasks

The doubled allowance is a relative increase from each plan’s previous Work and Codex allowance, not a promise of twice as many completed tasks. OpenAI says consumption varies with the model and task, the amount of context processed, reasoning, tool use, information retrieval, caching and speed mode. A short coding request and a long agent workflow can draw on the allowance differently. (OpenAI’s Pro tier details; OpenAI’s Codex usage guidance)

Speed modes also affect how quickly included usage is consumed. OpenAI says Fast mode uses the included allowance at 2.5 times the Standard rate. On Pro 500, Ultrafast uses included allowance at 8 times the Standard rate; after that allowance is used, it draws purchased credits at 6 times the Standard credit rate. These are consumption rates, not measures of how quickly a task will finish. (OpenAI’s Pro tier details)

GPT-6 Pro Chat limits are separate

The October Work and Codex changes do not double every Chat limit. Pro 100 and Pro 500 keep their existing weekly GPT-6 Pro message limits in Chat. For Pro 200, the lower weekly Chat limit now matches the higher one. OpenAI treats those Chat message limits separately from the Work and Codex allowance. (OpenAI’s Pro tier details)

Where to check usage and what happens at a limit

Check usage in Settings or the usage dashboard. If Codex CLI is active, /status also shows usage information. Eligible Plus and Pro users can buy credits for eligible features; OpenAI Support cannot reset usage limits. (OpenAI’s Codex usage guidance)

OpenAI plans a shared ChatGPT and Codex allowance for December

OpenAI says Plus, Pro and Business will move to a shared, token-based allowance across ChatGPT and Codex starting in December. Instant chat will not draw from that allowance. This is a separate planned change from the October increase to Work and Codex allowances. (OpenAI’s usage-limit guidance)
