OpenEMM is an application for sending mass emails and for performing automated marketing. There are three important points in marketing (Find – Attract – Win), and in this tutorial we'll discuss how to install OpenEMM on your computer so you can do corporate marketing through automatic email sending.
Marketing is a process, an event, not a sale. That's why we'll help you use OpenEMM so your clients don't think a robot is doing the automation.
What You Need Before Installing
Once you download the OpenEMM package from its official page (which takes a few minutes), we recommend that you have the following applications installed on your system:
- Java JDK 8
- MySQL
- Python
- the MySQL database module for Python
- Tomcat 6 (version .zip)
In all cases, use the latest version and restart your system.
Installation Steps
After copying the "OpenEMM" folder to your "C" drive, click on the file "setup.bat".
The application interface will guide you to configure the utility as a server on your computer (no dedicated server needed). The first step is to insert the user, password, and MySQL database (created in MySQL); you'll insert this twice.
Then you'll need to determine your domain to access via URL. By default, access is "http://www.tudominio.com:8080" and the port is always "8080". (The domain depends on the location of the folder.)
To configure incoming, outgoing, and erroneous emails, you'll need to point your computer to the OpenEMM machine. To find out the host name of your computer, go to "cmd" (Start, Programs, Accessories, and choose Command Prompt), type the root of your domain, and the system will provide the information.
Using the OpenEMM Platform
At this point, you can enter the platform and you'll find options to create mailings, view statistics, add, view, import and export recipients, create groups, and view and create mailing lists, among other options.
Another good option is the service to create templates so you can use them automatically and inform your clients about your company's news.
Final Thoughts
Having a tool to automate your emails is very important for your business, because informing your clients or retaining them is as important as attracting them.
Personally, configuring all the platforms we need for OpenEMM to work locally is a very tedious task. I would lean more toward the service provided by MailChimp, which is ready to use and offers a huge range of marketing services.
We tested it on Windows 10 64-bit and the tool didn't work, but it worked perfectly on Windows 7 32-bit. We also couldn't get the bounced email configuration to work on either system.
So the conclusion we draw is that if you want something simpler and not so heavy, you can choose PhpList, or lean toward the aforementioned MailChimp.
