In an attempt to improve this situation, programmer Julius Sweetland developed OptiKey, a virtual keyboard that we can control with our eyes, and the best part is that it is free and open source software.
In most cases, those of us who closely observe technology do so taking into account different aspects, such as entertainment and productivity. However, its potential can go much further as long as a project is determined to tackle and solve a specific problem. For example: I am writing these lines with a traditional keyboard. I have the privilege of complete motor capacity, without limitations in fingers, hands, or arms. In fact, my hands are an extension of my work, but there are many people out there who cannot say the same. Different types of conditions impair manipulation and movement, whether temporarily or permanently. In some cases, the effects are so advanced that the only way to communicate is through the eyes or with very subtle muscle spasms.
The High Cost of Communication
The problem is that systems compatible with that type of communication can demand an investment of thousands of dollars, seriously limiting access. Programmer Julius Sweetland came to the conclusion that such a cost is absurd, and over three and a half years, between pauses and free time, worked to create a free and open alternative.
The final result is OptiKey, a virtual keyboard that can be controlled with the eyes, installing a tracking camera with a price that should not exceed one hundred euros. In case it is not possible to acquire such a camera, OptiKey works with any other pointing device, be it a mouse, trackball, or trackpad. OptiKey has the ability to automatically insert spaces and capitalize letters, and as if that were not enough, it has a function to convert what we have written into voice.
An Extraordinary Response
The response to the development of OptiKey, its download for Windows, and the release of its code (which will surely allow it to be brought to more platforms) has been extraordinary. Family members of people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis have already contacted the developer, and the Web picked up the news almost immediately.
