The latest editions of Windows are full of junk, and finding an “optimizer” that isn’t an ad trap or locked-down trialware is increasingly difficult. Fortunately, the open source universe responds with very interesting developments, and one of the most recent is WinClean, which combines a series of scripts accompanied by an accurate description and the exact command it will run on the operating system.
In general, the optimization process for any edition of Windows comes down to removing bloatware, disabling unnecessary services, reducing background processes, deactivating irrelevant features, and of course preventing Microsoft from undoing all of this. We have previously recommended alternatives like AppBuster and its twin application ShutUp10++ to delete apps and limit telemetry, but if you want even more precise control through scripts, you should take a look at WinClean.
How to Optimize and Clean Windows with WinClean
The program is available with traditional installers and portable builds in 32 and 64 bits. The interface is divided into three tabs: Maintenance, Debloat and Customization. Maintenance has entries to clean disks, delete logs, remove old restore points and temporary files, run Component Store cleanup, and open the System File Checker, among other things.
Debloat goes to the heart of Windows services, disabling things like telemetry, biometrics, Bluetooth, Smart Card, BitLocker, parental controls, mobile hotspot and Xbox. You can also remove Internet Explorer 11, WordPad, OneDrive, Print to PDF and even Cortana.
Finally, Customization lets you enable file extensions visibility, disable hibernation and web search in the Start menu, block Windows Timeline, re-enable the classic image viewer, show the full path of files in Explorer's bar, and show seconds in the system tray clock.
The scripts are divided into Recommended (green tone), Limited (gray), and No (red), but you can also add custom scripts manually.
