But today he has something special: Like many other people around the world, Mark was a victim of package theft at his doorstep. Faced with such frustration and the police's refusal to track down the thief, he decided to do "vigilante justice" and prevent future thefts by creating a super package thief trap based on a glitter bomb combined with artificial flatulence. The results are... wonderful.
The extraordinary advancement of online services like Amazon and the option of free home delivery opened a new era of convenience and comfort for the consumer, but that also gave rise to a classic problem: package theft. In many countries, no delivery is carried out without a prior signature; however, on the other side of the pond they are a bit more relaxed, leaving the package at the door, unattended. The era when the U.S. Marines received orders to guard the mail and shoot anyone who tried to steal it is long gone. Today, the most likely thing is that the local police say they don't have resources, or that the insurance takes care of the problem. Something similar happened to Mark Rober, who on his channel taught us to beat various carnival games, and to detect the scam in ticket arcades. He waited for a package, the mail declared it 'delivered', he checked the security recording, and confirmed the theft. His response is pure engineering:
This is one of the most advanced designs in package thief traps we have ever seen. After working on the prototype for six months, Mark and a friend created this platform with two modes of attack: the first is to throw glitter on the thief and their entire surroundings with a rotating plate on top. The second fires the valve of an aerosol with artificial flatulence five times every 30 seconds, so that the thief ends up scared off by the smell and disposes of the package. A total of four smartphones are responsible for recording all the action, providing GPS support to locate the trap after the robbery, and uploading the videos to the cloud in case someone cleverer decides to open the device and keep the phones.
It is worth noting that Mark was a bit nervous after the first activation, because his channel is not dedicated to pranks, and something can always go wrong. However, the effectiveness of the trap is astonishing. He even lent it to a friend (another victim of package theft), and the reactions of the thieves are worth gold. Another striking aspect is that the thieves seem more kleptomaniac than anything else. Either way, they will think 23 or 24 times next time. Mark said the glitter trap is his masterpiece. After 9 million views... I think he is right.
