Pimax announced Spation, a compact PC for PC VR

Pimax announced Spation as a compact gaming PC aimed at PC VR, with a listed AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D or equivalent and a choice of AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT or Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti. It supports Windows and SteamOS, but neither is preinstalled. Pimax also describes a DIY option in which it supplies the chassis and the buyer supplies storage and a GPU.

Spation is designed around PC VR gaming and desktop-class components. It has also been compared with a long Steam Machine in form factor. That gives you a rough sense of the design direction, rather than a measured size or performance comparison.

The announced component list is substantial on paper, but the available choices matter more for planning a build: there are two graphics-card options, one memory configuration, and one listed SSD capacity.

The announced Spation specifications

Pimax lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and 2.5G Ethernet. Video connections include two DisplayPort 2.1 outputs, one HDMI 2.1 output, and one USB-C DisplayPort 1.4a connection. The port list also includes one USB4 Type-C port and six USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports.

Windows, SteamOS, and the DIY configuration

Spation supports both Windows and SteamOS, but Pimax says neither comes installed. If you choose the DIY configuration, Pimax supplies the chassis while you provide storage and a GPU; the DIY setup also calls for installing Linux or another preferred operating system.

Pimax says the GPU and memory are swappable and that you can add storage. That gives buyers options for changing those components, while the DIY route lets them provide their own graphics card and storage from the start. Pimax also says its Pimax Play client for Linux is coming.
