Pokémon Showdown: Online and Multiplayer Pokémon Battles
Pokémon Showdown

The Pokémon saga is one of the richest and most complex in the world of video games. With more than 800 different Pokémon, type advantages, special powers, and secondary resources, finding the perfect team is no easy task. Some battles are very long, while others are resolved in seconds, but there is a missing element: a great multiplayer space where trainers from across the globe can pit their teams against each other. Pokémon Showdown is that space, and with over a million monthly players, it is a paradise for any Pokémon fan.

As far as Pokémon games go, I must admit I never went beyond the third generation. I thoroughly enjoyed Ruby, Sapphire, and the remakes of the original games, but it's clear that the franchise moves at a pace I can't keep up with. It's always a good time to gain traction again, however, with the introduction of new generations and changes in type advantages, it's likely our knowledge is obsolete. The most comfortable and personal way to assimilate those "new" and strange Pokémon is through the official games, but there is an online alternative that is definitely superior. Its name is Pokémon Showdown, it's free, you don't need to download anything, and with a couple of clicks you'll be immersed in battles up to your neck.

Random Battles and Categories

The simplest option to start fighting is to choose a random battle based on a specific generation and let Showdown select the Pokémon team for you. Some combinations will be very strong, while others basically guarantee a loss.

After that, we can look for fights following special categories: Ubers (with the most powerful Pokémon), OverUsed (OU), UnderUsed (UU), RarelyUsed (RU), NeverUsed (NU), and PU, the weakest. Using these categories is positive in several ways. On one hand, it minimizes the possibility of an imbalance (something we can't completely avoid in Random), and on the other, it allows eliminating extreme legendaries and mega evolutions.

Practice and Customization

Pokémon Showdown has proven to be a fundamental tool for professional players and streamers, since besides enabling matches with rivals of the same level, it is an excellent practice environment. If a player wants to test an unusual combination, they can do that and much more without too many consequences in Showdown, but there is an extra: the customization of Pokémon. Creating the perfect Pokémon within an official game gives a completely different dimension to the word grind, however, in Showdown it's a minimal intervention.

Spectate Live Battles

Not interested in fighting? Then why not watch? On average there are about 2,000 battles at any given moment, and in the Watch a battle section we can jump into any of them, or filter by ranking and/or category. Now, the question of the decade: Why didn't Nintendo bomb this from orbit? Instead of answering that, I recommend you go and enjoy Pokémon Showdown now.
