When it comes to defining default programs, Windows always wants to impose its will. Basically, the goal is that its factory configuration doesn't change, "suggesting" services from Redmond, and limiting the number of options. However, many users out there want to register portable programs as default to simplify their transfer to other computers, and the open source tool called Portable Registrator reduces the entire process to a couple of clicks.
The configuration of default programs in Windows is (for lack of a better expression) a real torture. This is especially true in Windows 11, which does everything possible to prevent changing the browser (with behavior bordering on malicious), and keep Edge as default.
Fortunately, there are many guides and resources that allow us to control that section of the operating system, but we also want the possibility to register portable programs as default. By using portable browsers and email apps, it is much easier for some users to move configurations, profiles, and databases. The first step is to download a copy of Portable Registrator.
How to register portable programs as default in Portable Registrator
It is much simpler than it seems: Run Portable Registrator with elevated privileges, look for the .exe file of the portable program, select the category, specify the exact name it will have, and finally click Register. The presets available in the program include five generic options (image viewer, email, media player, notepad, and browser), three entries for Microsoft Office, the PDF reader SumatraPDF, VLC Player, and WinRAR.
It is always recommended to restart the computer to confirm this type of setting, but it is not mandatory. If for some reason we regret the association, we can go to the Unregister portable App section, look for the entry in the Registered Portables list, and click Unregister.
Portable Registrator is designed for Windows 7, Windows 8.x, and Windows 10, but I can confirm that it works very well on Windows 11. Now, it is necessary to remember that Portable Registrator does not change the default application automatically. Its job is to enable the registration of portable programs, and the final selection is up to us.
