What is Private.sh?
Google wants to know everything about you with each search. On the other side of the street, DuckDuckGo declares that your information shouldn't be for sale. What's the next step? It's likely that Private.sh has the answer. It's a young search engine developed by Private Internet Access and Gigablast that can encrypt all your searches before sending them to the web through a proxy, without personal details, like your public IP address.
The appetite of Big Data is insatiable. Knowing your location or main tastes is no longer enough. Entire platforms chew data daily in an attempt to adapt better to your preferences. Privacy? Fine, thanks. Anonymity? I guess nothing prevents us from using Tor but the point is that tools should be as private and anonymous as the medium of communication.
Private.sh is one of those tools. This search engine took its first steps in November. The engine is maintained by Private Internet Access (the same company that offers VPN services) and Gigablast, which provides its index. Now, how does Private.sh do things better compared to other search engines?
How does Private.sh work?
Basically, each request made by the user through the official page or with the use of its official extension (compatible with Firefox and Chrome, which requires manual installation) is encrypted locally, and sent to the search provider (Gigablast) using a proxy that removes any secondary personal detail, including the public IP address.
This way, the provider can decrypt and process the search request without knowing our identity or location. The results are sent back through the proxy (also encrypted) and rendered with the browser's JavaScript engine. Private.sh doesn't see anything that happens, and the provider doesn't communicate with us.
Speed and limitations
A very positive detail about Private.sh is its speed. It takes less than a second to process each search, and we can also apply additional filters, for example, if we want a general web search or only news portals, and the country (Spain is on the list). Weak points? Two to start: Its results are not that good, and we can't search for images, but despite these limitations, I think it's worth keeping an eye on Private.sh.
