Few games have been as detrimental to productivity globally as Minesweeper. Designed (in theory) to help users improve their mouse control in preliminary versions of Windows, Minesweeper is addictive, frustrating, and almost a metaphor for our lives. The masterminds at Google Chrome Labs decided to take inspiration from that classic to create Proxx, an online free minesweeper that changes mines for black holes, and also serves as a tech demo.
Mobile devices live and die by their apps. Under that mechanic, fully functional phones and tablets a few years old end up stored in drawers and closets, or in much worse places. Manufacturers try to extend the lifespan of their products by integrating more processing power, but the overall situation seems to be changing.
A new generation of "smart feature phones" based on KaiOS seek to offer modern features (WiFi, GPS) and apps without raising costs or sacrificing durability. The problem is that the resources available on these phones are very limited, and require other priorities when writing code. That leads us to the famous Minesweeper, and to the Proxx clone created by Google Chrome Labs.
Proxx: Free Online Minesweeper that Works Almost Everywhere
According to Mariko Kosaka, one of the people responsible for the project, Proxx obeys five main parameters: The same core experience must be available on all devices, it has to adapt to mouse, keyboard, touch screen, d-pad and screen readers, the initial package needs to be under 25 kilobytes, less than five seconds of load on 3G connections, and 60 FPS in its graphics.

Needless to say, its dependence on web workers is very large. The Proxx interface was built in Preact, and WebGL handles the graphics. The final result is a very pleasant experience, with fluid animations, and the same addictive component of classic Minesweeper.
Now, I say that Proxx works "almost" everywhere because I found some exceptions to the rule. As lightweight as it is, the standard browser of Android 2.3 refuses to load the page, while Internet Explorer on Windows Phone 8.1 presents multiple errors. They are two isolated and unusual cases, but they remind us that KaiOS is the priority here. Leaving all technical details aside, Proxx is a drug made into a game. Don't say I didn't warn you.
