Tired of the “Marvel remakes” and new series? If so, we don't blame you. Netflix's catalog is broad, but when we look for something more specific, the truth is it tends to disappoint. For example, let's say you enjoy horror to the fullest. Classic, contemporary, blood, guts, monsters, possessions... everything. How does an equivalent to Netflix focused on that material sound? If that gets your attention, you should visit Purga TV.
Recently we talked about the fragmentation problem caused by some distributors in the streaming world. Basically, they are creating subscription systems around one or two popular series, thus multiplying user frustration. However, the landscape changes when a service focuses on entire genres. A couple of months ago, Max told us about Jump, a “Netflix” for indie games that just finished its beta phase. Now, let's imagine a service dedicated exclusively to action, science fiction, or horror. For the latter, there is Purga TV.
Cult and contemporary horror, European and American projects, the best of Asian horror, the occasional comedy, you choose. From the Ring saga to Troma classics like The Toxic Avenger and Sgt. Kabukiman N.Y.P.D. (which you can watch for free on YouTube!), Purga TV offers around 50 movies in its catalog, plus the short films that participated in the Macabro 2017 festival. Purga TV has a fairly clean web edition and an Android app, but they will add iOS support shortly. Its interface is intuitive and easy to use, although personally I would like each entry to have the corresponding official trailer.
If you are not entirely convinced yet, don't worry: Purga TV enables a completely free one-month trial, and from there, the subscription is seven dollars per month with a credit card. I like to imagine that in the future they will adopt alternative payment methods, which will undoubtedly benefit international users.
