Thousands of enthusiasts around the world turned Doom into a kind of Hello World, but the truth is that Quake also deserves some love. The community has created a great number of mods for this classic from id Software, and one of the most interesting proposes a light mix between the first two games of the franchise. The Q2M mod developed by basementApe reproduces the weapons of Quake 2 in Quake 1, and it works much better than we expected...
Few believed it possible in 1996, but Quake ended up surpassing Doom in many ways. The damned game forced us to replace entire computers, but it also gave us true 3D graphics, better sound, more advanced physics, and a dense atmosphere from which we can only escape by shooting.
At the same time, it marked a before and after in id Software, leading to the departure of a good part of the team due to creative differences. Quake II debuted one year later with a different story and traditional sci-fi settings, completely abandoning the Lovecraftian essence of the first game. From a certain point of view, Quake 1 and Quake 2 only share the name, but thanks to a mod called Q2M, their relationship becomes closer...
Q2M: The Quake 2 Arsenal for Blowing Up Ominous Horrors in Quake 1
No, your eyes aren't deceiving you: the video shows Quake 1 with Quake 2 weapons, and it works... very well. Each weapon seems to have the right balance, and the acquisition process isn't exaggerated. The video uses the remastered version of Quake, but I haven't found any compatibility warnings for the original game.
The readme file explains that after loading the mod, the player has different loadouts at their disposal. The first is the vanilla experience of Quake 1, and the rest are based on Quake 2. Mod loading may vary depending on the engine, but in general it should be enough to open the console and type game q2m.
Personally, I don't remember the original Quake being so intense (though I'm getting old), but the video shows that battles are not at all easy, even with the changed weaponry. Classics never lose their shine, but if you want something different for next weekend, why not give this mod a chance?
