The video outputs on the Raspberry Pi have allowed us to develop all kinds of projects, but if someone is thinking about creating a tablet or a similar interactive system, the most likely thing is that they would want to use an integrated display. Thinking of those users, the foundation Raspberry Pi announced the new version of its official touch panel, Touch Display 2. This model increases the resolution to 720 x 1280 pixels, and adopts a thinner format, while keeping its physical size of 7 inches.
The market is full of displays compatible with (almost) all Raspberry Pi models. Some offer an excellent price/performance ratio, but what about official options? To be honest, the original Touch Display launch goes back to September 2015, and although it has maintained certain popularity, it clearly needed a refresh. That brings us to the foundation's portal, which has just announced the Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2.
Touch Display 2, a new touchscreen for the Raspberry Pi ecosystem
The official specifications confirm that the display keeps its basic 7-inch dimensions, with an active area of 88 x 155 mm. However, the Touch Display 2 raises the resolution to 720 x 1280 pixels. It supports five fingers at once, and has a thinner format, thanks to the decision to miniaturize and install its controller inside the housing. The announcement also mentions that the minimum compatibility base for the Touch Display 2 is the Raspberry Pi 1B+, with the exception of the Raspberry Pi Zero, since they lack the required DSI port.
The touchscreen gets power from that same port, so there is no need to connect a secondary power source. To finish, the foundation has said that the old model will continue to be manufactured, and that the Touch Display 2 will remain on the market until at least the year 2030. The price? $60.
