On October 4, Reflection was reported to be preparing its first open-weight model, part of a wider plan to build customized AI systems for institutions. The reported expectation was that the model would initially trail the most advanced U.S. models while competing with leading Chinese open-weight models—a forecast, not a measured comparison.

A proposed AI factory for institutions

Reflection’s proposed AI factory would bring together an institution’s own data, Reflection models and computing resources to build a customized, localized AI system. The concept is aimed at organizations that want an AI system shaped around their needs and data.

Reflection was also reported to have announced a partnership with South Korea’s Shinsegae Group for a sovereign AI factory.

Reported agreements for Nvidia computing capacity

Reflection was reported to have signed agreements with Nebius and SpaceX to rent Nvidia AI servers. Those arrangements connect the model effort to rented computing capacity, alongside the longer-term AI factory concept.

What open-weight means

In AI, “open-weight” describes making a model’s learned parameters—the weights that shape its outputs—available for others to use or adapt. The weights are separate from the data used to train a model.
