If there is a genre that keeps gaining popularity on YouTube, it’s restorations. Unfortunately, this interest has led to many fake channels, but it’s not hard to find those who do legitimate work. One of them is Paul Restorer, who recently accepted the challenge of restoring a Hot Wheels "Hot Rod Red Baron 6400" from 1970, including the missing rear wheels and a reproduction of the original box.
Time is often very hard on our favorite toys: broken plastic, pulverized wood, cracked metal, flaking paint, rust everywhere. However, there are many enthusiasts out there who face that accumulated damage and eliminate it masterfully. In some cases, the market offers modern reproductions of parts that simplify the process, while in others they must restore every detail manually, finding the exact balance between creativity and legitimacy. With that in mind, we come to the channel of Paul Restorer, who specializes in collectible cars. This time, the chosen vehicle is a 1970 Hot Wheels Red Baron.
Erasing half a century of damage from a 1970 Hot Wheels Red Baron
The first step is to disassemble the car, not easy considering its base is riveted from the factory. The fenders of the upper half receive the first adjustments, and what little remained of the old paint surrenders to modern chemicals. A quick polish with a soft brass brush gives way to the printing phase, and the reproduction of the famous red color that identifies this car.
With the help of another model, Paul managed to create molds to reproduce the correct wheels. The rivets were removed in favor of screws, followed by more polished parts, more paint, and some adhesive details. However, Paul didn’t stop there. As a final touch, he also built a new blister and the metallic Mattel Hot Wheels medal, using the original plastic that accompanied the car. Only a very trained eye or a veteran Hot Wheels expert will be able to detect the differences, but personally, I think the result is fabulous.
